Monday, May 20th:

We will begin a new project today where my students will be paired with someone from Mrs. Kramer's class and they will create a game board using a chapter out of the math book.  The students will design and create the game with their partner.  Today will be a planning and sketching day.

Tuesday, May 21st:

Students will get together with their partner and begin to create their game.

Wednesday, May 22nd:

Students will finish their game and play it to make sure that it works.

Thursday, May 23rd:

Students will play the games that all of the partners have created.

Friday, May 24th:

We will hand in our books and do an evaluation for the year.

Monday, May 20th:

Students will be reading with their buddy from Mrs. Kramer's room.   Today's assignment is "Foldable" and choosing 2 new vocabulary words to define.

Tuesday, May 21st:

Students will be reading with their buddy from Mrs. Kramer's room.   Today's assignment is to make a collage of the literary elements from their novel and choosing 2 new vocabulary words to define.

Wednesday, May 22nd:

Students will be reading with their buddy from Mrs. Kramer's room.   Today the students will read, finish their novel, finish their vocabulary, and take the AR test as well.

Thursday, May 23rd:

Students will finish up their Book Buddy project today.  We will begin a new project called "A Quilt of Compliments."

Friday, May 24th:

We will finish our "Quilt of Compliments" and make sure we have all of our schoolwork in.

Monday, May 13th:

We will begin a new mini-unit called "Number Theory Project."  The students will display knowledge of number theory concepts by finding and explaining their answers to nontraditional problems.  They will complete packet pages 34 and 35.

Tuesday, May 14th:

Students will finish their packet today, completing WS 36, 37, and 38.

Wednesday, May15th:

Students will complete a review packet today.

Thursday, May 16th:

Students will complete a review packet today.

Friday, May 17th:

Students will complete a WS called Measurement Domino where they will match equivalent measurements.

Thursday, May 9th:

We will begin a new mini-unit today called "Take a Survey."  Students will assume the role of an inventory manager for an athletic shoe store. They will conduct a survey on the products they plan to carry and interpret their data and make informed choices as managers.

Friday, May 10th:

We will work with the surveys today.  We will complete a data collection and a ratio display of the data.

Monday, May 6th:

Mrs. Allen will come in today for Life Skills class.

We will read chapters 18 and 19 in The City of Ember.  Students will complete questions and do some journal writing.

Tuesday, May 7th:

Today students will learn their partners from Mrs. Kramer's class that they will be Book Buddies with.  They will choose a book that they want to read together.  This book must be at their reading level and an AR book because they can count those points toward their April/May AR points.  Students need 20 points by May 17th.

We will finish The City of Ember today and students will complete a packet in partners and then take the AR test, which will count toward those 20 points too.

Wednesday, May 8th:

Our school set a goal to read 1.5 million pages and achieved it!!!!  So that mean we will watch a movie today in language arts class.  The students want to watch The City of Ember.  They may bring something to drink (with a screw on lid) and a treat to drink.  The school is providing popcorn from the movie theater.

Thursday, May 9th:

We will meet with our Book Buddies and go through the expectations, divide our books into sections, read the 1st assignment, and complete an assignment on the setting of their novel.  Students will also choose 2 vocabulary words to define within the context of their novel.

Friday, May 10th:

We will meet with our buddies to complete the day 2 reading, an assignment on making connections, and complete 2 new vocabulary words.

Monday, April 29th:

Students will finish with the pizza mini-unit today.  They will complete the last 2 stations and hand in all of their individual work.

Tuesday, April 30th:

We will begin a new mini-unit today called "Checkbook Challenge."  Students will complete the checkbook days 1-14.  We will also do some work on a website to complete online activities to learn about earning, saving, and spending.

Students will complete 3 more timecards in class today independently.

Students will complete payroll checks for all employees.  We will complete one in class together and then students will complete the last 3 independently.

Thursday, April 25th:

We will begin a new mini-unit today called "Out and About at the Pizzeria."  Students will participate in 6 stations over 3 days to complete math activities relating to mathematics used in the real world at a pizza shop.

Writing:  We will review what we have read from Rattlesnake Mesa.  We will also explore how an author creates voice.

Reading:  We will read chapter 2 in The City of Ember and complete the questions.

Writing:  We will read a new story today called "My Mother's Hand."  We will explore how the author creates voice and do a quick-write about a family member.

Reading:  We will read chapter 5 today and students will complete a packet of activities for chapters 3-5.

We will continue to review for the Dakota STEP test today.  Students will complete a review packet of chapters 9-11 in class.

Tuesday, April 9th:

We will continue to review for the Dakota STEP test today.  Students will complete a review packet of chapters 12-14 in class.  We will also begin a new project today too if time permits.  Students will create an original tessellation.  Today we will work on creating our pattern.

Monday, April 8th:

Writing:  We will begin a new writing unit today.  Students will write their own personal narrative as we move  through the unit.  In a personal narrative, the author writes about an event that happened in their life and the learning that occurred from that event.  We will read several stories in this unit that the students will be able to relate to and some that they will learn new things.  This week our stories will come from a book called Rattlesnake Mesa.  It is a story about a young Native American in the early 1900s.  We will brainstorm a list of our earliest memories in our Writer's Notebooks.

Speeches:  Students will give their demonstration speeches today.

Writing:  We will read a chapter from Rattlesnake Mesa today and write independently in our Writer's Notebook about a memory from our list.

We have finished our novels in class and students will make a movie trailer on the iPads showing the literary elements of their novel.  I have given the students the expectations for the trailer.  I will also introduce demonstration speeches today.  I will give an example speech.  Students will choose a topic and begin writing their speech today.

Students will be given time to finish their poetry movie.  This project is due on Thursday.  We will work on finding the main idea in text.  This reading comprehension strategy is called determining importance. Students will read their 9th assignment, complete a determining importance WS, and choose 2 new vocabulary words from today's reading and define them in the context of their novels.

Wednesday, March 27th:

Students will be given time to finish their poetry movie.  This project is due on Thursday.   The reading strategy we will work on today is called synthesizing.  Students will finish their novels today, complete a synthesizing WS, and finish their vocabulary for their novel unit.

Thursday, March 28th:

Students will be given time to finish their poetry movie.  This project is due today.  AR is also due today!  Students will take the AR test for the novel they have been reading in class and that will count toward their March AR points.  Students will learn about the elements of plot, as well as complete a plot diagram for their novel.

Students will complete DOL Tuesday exercises for week 14.  We will use context clues to understand unfamiliar words.  Students will read their 4th assignment.  We will focus on making text-to-self connections today with our reading.  Students will complete a text-to-self connection WS and do their vocabulary.

Wednesday, March 20th:

Students will complete DOL Wednesday exercises for week 14.  Students will read their 5th assignment. We will focus our attention on text-to-text connections and students will complete their vocabulary.  We will also identify generalizations about characters, events, or situations using text details and prior knowledge.

Thursday, March 21st:

Students will complete DOL Thursday exercises for week 14.  Students will read their 6th assignment.  We will focus on text-to-world connections and complete a WS, along with their vocabulary.  We will understand that authors write for different purposes and identify texts that are written to inform, to entertain, to persuade, and to describe.

Friday, March 22nd:

Students will complete DOL Friday exercises for week 14.  Students will read their 7th assignment.  We will work on the visualizing reading strategy.  Students will complete a WS and their vocabulary.  We will also work that theme is the author's important message about life.

Students will add and subtract measures of time in lesson 12-6 and complete WS 12-6.

Tuesday, March 12th:

Students will complete a chapter 12 review with vocabulary today.  They will also receive the chapter 13 vocabulary builder to complete.

It is National Pi Day.  Students will find the area of a circle in lesson 14-3 (yes this is from chapter 14) and complete WS 14-3 with a calculator.  Click here for chapter 14.

Monday, March 11th:

Mrs. Allen will come in for Life Skills today.  Students will complete the Monday exercises for DOL week 14.  Students will finish up their trailer they are making on iMovie for the figures of speech, that they will present to the class tomorrow.  Students will also finish up the poetry centers and begin making their poetry movie on the ipads.  Students too, will choose a novel from a selection to read in small groups.  We will be focusing on the reading comprehension strategies as they read.  There will also be vocabulary too.  The books are all AR books.  They will take the AR test when we are done and may count it towards their March points.

Tuesday, March 12th:

Students will complete the Tuesday DOL exercises for week 14.  They will present their trailer of the figures of speech to the class today.  Students will have time to work on their poetry movie in class.

Wednesday, March 13th:

Students will complete the Wednesday DOL exercises for week 14 and work on their poetry movie.  Students will set up the reading schedule to read their chosen novel in 10 days.  They will read their first assignment and choose 2 vocabulary words from today's reading and define them in the context of the novel. 

Thursday, March 14th:

Students will complete the Thursday DOL exercises for week 14 and work on their poetry movie.  We will learn about setting today in our novels.  After students read their 2nd assignment, do the vocabulary, they will illustrate and color a picture of the setting and write a descriptive paragraph.

Friday, March 15th:

Students will complete the Friday DOL exercises and hand it in to be graded.  The students will have time to work on their poetry movie.  We will work on the reading comprehension strategy of asking questions before, during, and after reading.  Students will read their 3rd assignment, complete the vocabulary and a questioning WS.

Monday, March 4th:

Students will learn about length in the Metric System in lesson 12-3 and complete WS 12-3.

Tuesday, March 5th:

Students will use Metric units of mass and capacity in lesson 12-4 and complete WS 12-4.

Writing:  Students will learn about a figure of speech called a simile today.  They will need a piece of their favorite fruit to complete an activity.  They will write a poem using similes about their favorite fruit.

Students will find the percent of a number in lesson 10-7 and complete WS 10-7.  Please study for the vocabulary quiz over the chapter 10 words...note the change in date.  The quiz will be WEDNESDAY, instead of Thursday as I had originally planned.

Students will estimate percent in lesson 10-8 and complete WS 10-8.  Please study for the vocabulary quiz tomorrow!

Wednesday, February 13th:

Writing:  We are reading a book called, an inconvenient truth by Al Gore.  We will use this book as a springboard for our writing ideas for nonfiction.

Reading:  We will read a book in class today called Asian Indian Americans.  We will identify the nonfiction text features, as well as, discuss the book and vocabulary.

Reading:   We will finish the book on Asian Indian Americans today, review vocabulary we learned yesterday, and put those vocabulary words in Pages on the iPad.  Don't forget AR is due next week on Thursday!

Students will graph ordered pairs of numbers on a coordinate plane in lesson 8-6 and complete WS 8-6.  Please encourage your child to study their chapter 8 vocabulary words for the quiz on Friday.

Students will take the chapter 8 vocabulary quiz and complete the chapter 8 study guide to prepare for the test on Monday.

Monday, January 7th:

Students will complete DOL week 7, the Monday exercises.  Spelling for  week 10 is "Other Vowel Digraphs."  Students will complete the Day 1 exercises.  We will watch a movie, The Cay to compare and contrast the novel we read before Christmas break.  Students will complete a Venn diagram.  The AR requirements for January are to read 10 points, or read 1 AR book, pass the test, and complete a project. 

Tuesday, January 8th:

Students will complete the DOL Tuesday exercises for week 7.  We will practice our spelling words in class and students will receive their week 10 homework.  We will begin a nonfiction unit today.  We will read a story called Life in the Oceans.  Our goal is to learn about nonfiction text features to help us read informational text.  We will learn so new vocabulary words from the story as well.

Wednesday, January 9th:

Students will complete DOL exercises for Wednesday and the day 3 exercises for spelling.  We will read another section of Life in the Oceans today concentrating on more nonfiction text features.  We will also review the vocabulary words we learned yesterday.  Students will choose a nonfiction book to read during this unit.  They may choose any topic of book and may use the book for their AR points as well.  We will use this book throughout this unit, identifying the text features within it.

Thursday, January 10th:

Students will complete the Thursday exercises for DOL and the day 4 exercises for spelling.  Students will hand in their week 10 homework for spelling too.  We will read a new article on The Pony Express and identify the nonfiction text features in it.

Friday, January 11th:

Students will complete the Friday exercises for DOL week 7.  They will also take the week 10 spelling test too.  We will read a new article today called "Extreme Sports." We will identify the text features within this article.  We will also learn the new vocabulary words that correspond to this article.

Monday, December 17th:

Students will add integers in lesson 8-2 and complete WS 8-2.

Tuesday, December 18th:

We will review addition of integers and students will complete a review WS.

Wednesday, December 19th:

Students will subtract integers in lesson 8-3 and complete WS 8-3.

If students have all of their work completed for me they will be able to play some online review games for integers.

Reading:  Students will go to the computer lab to create a PowerPoint presentation on a Caribbean animal of choice.  Students were given the choice to choose an animal last week and needed to research on their own either at home or during free time at school.  They need to research and find 8 interesting facts about their animal.  I have given the students the rubric so they know what the requirements for the project.

Reading:  We will go to the computer lab to work on our animal projects.

Thursday, December 20th:

If time permits, students will present their animal projects to the class.

Writing:  We will write our final copy of our poems called "A True Hero" in honor of our Veterans.

Reading:  We will begin a new unit today based on the book The Cay by Theodore Taylor. We will read/listen to this book in class.  Our spelling, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing activities will all be centered around this novel.  Students will also have a test at the end of this unit.  As part of the test, students will take the AR test too.  We will begin the unit today with an activity called "Stranded" where students will be given a list of items that they would have if they were stranded on a deserted island.  They will create a poster illustrating and writing how each of these items would be used.

AR:  I have introduced the AR project for the month.  Students are to create a diary as if they were the main character.  I have given the students a rubric that has all of the expectations on it.  The students that want to do the project will need to read one AR book at their reading level, pass the AR test, and complete the project by Nov. 30th.

Students will learn how to find the circumference of circles in lesson 4-6.  Today we will do an activity to discover and learn about pi.  We will read a story called Cir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi.  The vocabulary quiz over the chapter 4 words will be on Wednesday, instead of Tuesday.

Writing:  I will read aloud a book called Bedhead and I will introduce "Quick-Writes."  Students will write about an experience for their own lives and then try to exaggerate it like the author of Bedhead did to make it funny.

October AR Expectations:  There will be 2 choices for AR this month.  The first choice is students can continue to read 10 AR points, choosing books at their level of reading and taking the test on the computer.  Or, students may read one AR book, take the test (they have to pass it!) and then complete a project called a Book Tie.  I have gone through the expectations for the project and students have seen examples and have a worksheet to plan out their project, as well as a rubric as to how they will be graded.  October AR will be due on the 31st.

The chapter 2 Vocabulary Builder is due today.  Students will have a quiz over these words at the end of the chapter. I will let you know when that will be.  We will begin chapter 2 today.  Students will make and interpret frequency tables.  They will complete WS 2-1.  Students will also choose a favorite (such as color, pop, candy...) to survey their classmates about.  Then they will create a frequency table displaying that data, which we will turn into a bar graph later this week.  Please encourage your child to begin to study those vocabulary words for the upcoming quiz.

Tuesday, Sept. 18th:

Students will make and interpret bar and line graphs in lesson2-2.  They will complete WS 2-2.  Students will be assigned to take their information from surveying their classmates and turn it into a bar graph. I will go through the expectations for that graph today.  The graph will be due on Thursday.  Please encourage your child to begin to study those vocabulary words for the upcoming quiz.

Mrs. Allen will come in today for Life Skills Class.

Spelling:  We will begin spelling today.  Our spelling program is called Guided Spelling.  Its approach is to practice a spelling skill out loud together in class.  So every day we will practice our words in class.  On Tuesdays, there will be a short homework assignment that will be due on Thursdays and the tests will be on Fridays.  Our skill this week is "Short Vowels; Frequently Misspelled Words."  So,  we will practice those in class today.  I will always give the students the list on Mondays so they can study at home too.

Reading:  We will begin a new reading unit today, which will include new vocabulary words.  The students will need a vocabulary notebook for class.  Just a regular notebook is fine, we don't need anything special.  With the reading and vocabulary, the students will learn the new vocabulary and I will read aloud a story.  The students will take vocabulary notes as we go through the new words and will eventually have a quiz when we are done with the unit.  There will be some sort of activity that we do for each story.  It may be comprehension questions, an activity, or some sort of writing.  We will also have a reading partner that we will work with through the whole unit.  We will switch partners with each unit.  This will also go for our writing units as well.

Tuesday, Sept. 18th:

Spelling:  We will practice our words in class and students will receive the week 1 homework.  This will be due on Thursday.

Reading:  We will reread a story called Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears.  Students will complete some comprehension questions after listening to the story.  Our focus for this unit  is to make text-to-self connections.

Reading:  We will listen to a new story today called And Still the Turtle Watched.  We will also add some new vocabulary words to our notebooks.

We have been learning about The Seven Habits of Happy Kids.  Today we will learn about Habit 6:  Synergize.  We will read a story called "Big Bad Badgers" and write about what makes a good team player and what makes a bad team player.

We will read a book called Have You Filled a Bucket? Throughout the year, students will be writing compliments for each other and then they will bring these home to keep.  We will practice writing compliments today.  We are reading The Richest Man in Town in class and VJ Smith the author tells about Marty, the main character, and how he always put others first and was always making people happy through giving them compliments.

We will learn about the last of the 7 Habits:  Sharpen the Saw.  This habit is learning about taking care of ourselves by finding balance for our hearts, minds, souls, and bodies.  We will read a story called "Sleepy Sophie."  In our 7 Habits notebooks we will write at least one way to find balance in those 4 areas.

Students will write an Emotion Poem today.  They will pick an emotion and write a poem about it.  I have a format the students will follow that explains everything.
